Marshall the Bully Goat books make great Christmas Presents!

I've been spending a great deal of time in classrooms lately, substitute teaching for students in grades four to twelve. While I enjoy interacting with students of all ages, I find the middle

grades to be where I'm most comfortable.

I'm nicknamed the Singing Sub as I teach and sing campfire silly songs at the end of the class

period, if they've been attentive to me and to their lessons. We sing "Oh Chester Have You

Heard About Harry", "Head and Shoulders Knees and Toes", and a host of others. Singing these

songs helps relieve classroom stress, provide movement activities, and develop classroom

comradery in a fun, non-judgmental way.

It's fun to see the sleepy kids wake up, and the inattentive kids pay attention!

The downside of substitute teaching is dealing with adolescent attitudes. These are not only

directed towards me, when the kids think I'm treating them unfairly, but they are directed, in the

form of mild bullying against their classmates. When I notice this subtle form of bullying, it

reminds me why I wrote the Marshall the Billy Goat series of books for adolescent readers.

Marshall enjoys being a bully and even forms his own bully goat gang. From butting everything

in sight, including the farm wife Esther while she's hanging clothes on the line, to chasing baby

chicks around, Marshall never misses a chance to harass and embarrass the other farm

animals.

Student Illustrators

I'm working on a new project involving student illustrators. I've been doing substitute teaching at our local high school & middle school this year. The students are fascinated with me being an author. As I share my books , they comment about the illustrations drawn by my friend Anne Hogue. Some mentioned they'd like to illustrate books at some time in the future.

I had the brilliant idea of allowing them to illustrate a book for me. I felt I needed some books for 1st and 2nd grade readers, as this age group hasn't received as much attention as the age groups had.

So, I wrote the text to an ABC book focusing on this age group.

I'm offering the opportunity to our Riverside School District high school and middle school students at the Wathena, KS campus to illustrate this book.

I placed the text on a sheet of paper, with a line drawn to provide an 8" x 8" drawing space. My instructions

included the elements of illustration lay-out and content.

I introduced these the art class students I subbed for yesterday and the students who accepted the invitation are eagerly working on their chosen illustrations. I expect to see their rough drafts within a few days.

Both the art teacher and the school principal are very excited about this project. It will allow those students who like to draw and opportunity to have their work and names highlighted in the book.

And it will provide me with a new source of illustrators.

I don't have a timeline for publication, but I'll be anxious to share updates on this project as we move forward. The book is entitled "Did You Know?" and the pages include alphabet references to things these young readers might not know.

Marshall and The Zippy Zoo Friends

Looking forward to sharing my next book with my readers. Marshall and the Zippy Zoo friends is in publication now and will be released early next year. This story, the 4th in the Marshall goat series brings the little family of goats to their newest home in the city zoo. This book starts with an unfortunate accident suffered by a little fawn, Buttons with his older sister Rosie looking out for him.

Once again Marshall finds a way to help them along with the other farm animals.

Later in the book, he loses his other horn, in yet another heroic event. Rather than hampering his activities, he uses it to his advantage and continues his usual antics, this time with his new group of friends at the zoo.

This book connects the Marshall series with one of my early childhood books. Young readers can start with the original Zippy Zoo Friends book, then later advance to Marshall and the Zippy Zoo friends. I'm looking forward to the reviews I'll receive from my ninth book!

Class Reunion 2024

I attended my 55 ^th class reunion in Maryville, Mo this last weekend. We are the graduating class of 1969. Our school mascot is a Spoofhound.

Here’s an explanation of our mascot, which is really quite interesting. The school mascot Spoofhound is based on a Plaster of Paris souvenir mascot that was distributed in 1921 during the American Legion convention in Kansas City, Missouri that was held in conjunction with the dedication of the Liberty Memorial . That mascot was based on a drawing by World War I veteran James D. Laingor who made a drawing that was a compilation of 20 photographs of mascot dogs of various World War I units. Laingor

copyrighted the image of "Spoof hound and Goof" in 1921. The image was turned into a statue

which Laingor sold via his company "Spoof Hound” of Kansas City, Missouri. The headline on its advertisement in American Legion Magazine said, "Meet the Spoof Hound, the ugliest critter in existence." The text said, "You buddies who are coming to Kansas City are going to meet the oneriest looking Son-of-A-Gun that ever came down a Company street. He's the Spoof-Hound." Laingor was a University of Missouri Journalism School student and said he had originally used the name to describe his coffee club. Spoofhound statues left over from the convention were sold at carnivals in 1922.

Leslie Edward Ziegeler (1894-1957), who coached the high school team said his players looked like a bunch of Spoofhounds. The name stuck and as the 1923 football season began the team was called the Spoofhound by the Maryville Daily Forum.

In the 1940s, Ziegler became the superintendent of schools for Columbia, Missouri where the mascot is also named for an early 20th-century doll—the Kewpies. The image of the Spoofhound has evolved over the years. From the 1950s to the mid-1970s, drawings of it showed a softer more filled out creature called Spoofy.

In 1977 the "Hi Lights" the high school publication which appeared weekly in the Forum ran a contest entitled, "Spoofy - Does he have a face?" in which they sought a redesign to a more aggressive Spoofhound. The winner of this contest was the school art instructor Brian L. Lohafer. Lohafer was also a coach, and he led the football Spoofhounds to state championship 994, 1996 and a basketball state championship appearance in 1995. A variation of the mascot he designed is still the mascot of the school.

ESPN recognized the Spoofhound as one of its top mascot names and enshrined the Spoofhound in their "Mascot Hall of Fame." As of 2016, no other academic institution or sports club had adopted the nickname. Source: Wikipedia

The great thing about reunions is that the older we get, the less competitive we are with one another. Our high school years were defined by the popular kids vs the regular kids. I was in the second category. I was well liked, but our family economics didn’t include money for sports and cheer leading activities. My older sister and I couldn’t date until we were 16, and by then the popular couples had already been established. I never lamented this, except some of the cuter boys made my heart flutter just a little, when they actually acknowledged me.

Now, at the age of 73 those old distinctions are long gone. We now visit about our retirement activities instead of our careers, and our grand and great grandchildren rather than our children and their various careers.

We’ve lost more classmates and classmate’s spouses then we like and lament that we never know when our names will be added to that list.

Those who served in the military are fewer now too, although we continue to salute those who did serve in their younger years.

Although social drinking is still a part of our gatherings, it’s no longer the focus. We are not there to dance and fool around, we’re there to visit and reminisce. We take pictures, knowing that as each year passes, there will be a lessor number at our next reunion. For our 60 ^th reunion, some of us won't be able to travel long distances and many will have bigger health conditions to contend with.

For now, at the 55 ^th reunion, with an age centered around the 73 year mark, we came from various places and enjoyed the company of one another. There are no longer distinctions between the popular and not so popular, but a group of individuals who spent a part of our childhoods together and relish the chance to meet again to recall old stories and share new ones.

It doesn’t matter now how large or small we are, what color our hair has turned, if we’re lucky enough to have hair at all, or what devices we depend on such as walkers and hearing aids. We just care about one another. We enjoy hugs and laughter. We share phone numbers and e-mail addresses for contact purposes.

Most of all though, we share an appreciation for life in general. No matter the who, what, when, where or why of our stories, we gather together, and praise God for the opportunity to do so.

I salute my classmates and friends for the wonderful lives we have lived and for the opportunity to reunite after all these years. May God continue to bless us in the days ahead and, if able, to meet again at our 60 ^th class reunion. Go Spoofhounds class of 1969!

Award Winning Author!

I recently attended the Epsilon Sigma Alpha’s 77th International Council Convention in Overland

Park, Kansas. I’ve been a member of ESA for nearly twelve years. This organization was

created in 1929 by Adelia Prichard, in Jacksonville, Texas for the purpose of promoting educational,

leadership, and service programs that were born through the organization’s commitment to

making a positive difference for its members and the causes they support.

As part of this organization’s support of promoting excellence in all areas, they incorporate

an Association of the Arts award winning competition in each of their individual state, regional

and international conferences.

Submissions are grouped into several categories including photography, needlework, visual arts

and more. This year I entered my book, Diane’s Daily Devotions in the composition category,

where it received the first place award! This makes me one of only seventy seven ESA members

to receive a 1st place award in this category!

Lynda Edwards.

Write Your Story!

I've had many people ask, "I'd like to write my story, but I don't know how to get started."

I've offered small workshops on getting started but find it hard to find a time convenient to get all those interested together, so I've decided to write a few blogs about how I got started writing and how you can get started too.

I recently read this quote about the art of storytelling.

“Storytelling is among the oldest forms of communication. Storytelling is the commonality of all human beings, in all places, in all times.” ― Rives Collins

We each have stories to tell. Stories about our own lives, experiences, thoughts, reflections, worries and concerns, joys and sorrows. We also have the stories that have been told to us through other's experiences.

I think the hardest part of starting a story is the start. We don't know how to gather the thoughts needed to focus on, as we tend to want to write the entire story in one sitting.

Obviously, that's the wrong way to start. Let me help you get some focus on how to begin, and then we'll work on the next step as we go along.

Moses and the Exodus: A Poem for Young Readers

I'm ready to start my next book, now that the Marshall books have been published. I'm not sure if there will be another Marshall book or not, but for now I'm moving on to another project.

I love poetry and have written many poems over my lifetime. I'm considering writing a series of Bible stories in poetic form. My audience will be young readers, who can read them with their parents or caregivers. I fear most children don't know these ancient stories, and I thought this could be an intriguing way to provide them with this knowledge.

I started with the story of Moses. It's not complete, but I'll share it here, hoping I'll get some feedback as to whether I should pursue this idea or not. Any and all comments are appreciated.

Moses saves His People

When Moses was a baby boy the Pharoah of the land

Commanded that all Israelite baby boys’ lives, would have to end.

His mother put him in a basket and sent him down the Nile

Along with his sister to look after him, they traveled about a mile.

Some women bathing in the river, saw the basket, while his sister watched and waited,

They saw it was holding a baby boy, and they knew they had to save it.

The Pharoah’s daughter adopted him to be her own sweet son,

She gave him the name of Moses, hoping a new Pharoah he could someday become.

As Moses grew up in the palace, as a member of the Pharoah’s clan,

He began to worry about the family from which he had originally come.

When he grew up to a full-grown man, he decided he needed to leave,

Knowing this would surely make his adopted family grieve.

The Pharoah was angry with Moses, and sent him on his way,

Moses traveled far and wide, to a new and different place

While their God spoke to Moses, by a burning bush on a mountainside,

And told him to go back to Egypt, his people needed him as a guide.

When Moses went back to the Pharoah, he asked him to let his people go,

But the Pharoah was angry with Moses and gave him a definite “NO!”

Moses went to God in prayer asking what he should do next,

God answered, “I’ll send some plagues to convince, that my people need to exit!”

For the next several days ten plagues were sent, from frogs to locusts and lice

The water of the Nile was turned to blood red, and hail stones fell from sky,

Finally old Pharoah had enough and said, “Take your people away!”

“I know they won’t like their freedom and they’ll come back to me one day.”

So, Moses led his people out of Egypt to the shores of the wide Red Sea,

And wondered how they would cross; no way was provided they could see.

By this time the wicked Pharoah had a change of mind one day,

He sent his chariots out to catch them and stop them from running away.

The Israelites saw the chariots coming and asked Moses “What shall we do?”

Moses offered a prayer to God, asking for help, which they knew they needed soon.

As the chariots grew closer, God sent a fire to stop them,

While telling Moses to touch the sea with his staff, and they were all amazed at what happened!

The sea started opening, making a way for the people to cross on dry land,

It was held in place while the people crossed, by God’s own mighty hand.

As soon as all were safely, to the shore on the other side,

The chariots again started chasing them, as the fire holding them back did subside.

Just as the horses entered the sea, the waters started closing in,

And all the chariots and horses were buried under them.

Now following Moses, the crowd knelt down, praising God for their safe escape,

God protected all of his people, from what might have been a deathly fate.

Now Moses had a problem. How could he take care of all these folks?

With a need for food and water, his problems were beginning to grow!

He knew that God would guide him, as he’d promised he would do his best,

Crumpled People Around Us

I was recently the guest speaker for a Women's Retreat at the Deer Park United Methodist church in St. Joseph, MO.

The ladies were warm and congenial, and we enjoyed our time together. I spoke on the topic of Responding to God's nudges, sharing times in my life I have felt directed to reach out and accomplish something, under the direction of God's Holy Spirit.

I shared a memory I had of a press conference with someone in the hierarchy of the Kansas City Chief's organization several years ago. He said he was worried about the organization as a whole based a piece of litter he saw lying on a step one day. He passed by the crumpled piece of trash for several days, waiting to see if someone was going to pick it up and throw it away. He felt that the organization was lacking in respect and duty, as no one seemed to take responsibility for removing the trash.

My first thought was "Why didn't he just pick it up himself? Did he feel above that menial task that no one seemed to undertake?" I then thought, "Who would be responsible for that? Was it the janitor, a patron or someone else?"

I shared this with the women, stating that this overlooked and forgotten crumpled piece of paper was like the people we are called to take care. Those who can't make anything happen on their own but are dependent on someone to help them. They cry and beg, but we just walk on by, thinking it's someone else's responsibility to pick them up. Even if we just pick them up and carry them to the trash bin, at least they are no longer alone. They have a community of trashy others to help them.

At the final session of the day, I asked if anything I'd shared had helped any of them look closer at the nudges in their lives and how they can respond to them. One young lady stood up and said, "I was that crumpled piece of paper."

She went on the describe her life recently in facing the tragic death of her father and other life altering events.

I was so glad I had responded to God's prompting to speak about this incident, so that she had a relatable testimony to share.

God continues to nudge us every single day. How we respond is our mission. There will always be crumpled people around us. Do we stop and help them or just keep right on walking. I pray that we at least look around to see if we are the somebody that is called to complete that task.

I closed by sharing this well-known story by an unknown author, adding a new phrase at the end:

This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.

There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.

Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.

Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.

Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.

It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

If you will be that somebody, which can be anybody, who does the job that nobody else will do, then everybody will be blessed because somebody, like you did it!

God's Nudges

Are you listening to God's nudge?

One of my favorite scriptures comes from 1 Kings: 19: 9-12

There Elijah entered a cave and spent the night. And the word of the LORD came to him, saying, “What

are you doing here, Elijah?”

“I have been very zealous for the LORD, the God of Hosts,” he replied, “but the Israelites have forsaken

Your covenant, torn down Your altars, and killed Your prophets with the sword. I am the only one left,

and they are seeking my life as well.”

Then the LORD said, “Go out and stand on the mountain before the LORD. Behold, the LORD is about to

pass by.” And a great and mighty wind tore into the mountains and shattered the rocks before the LORD,

but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the LORD was not in

earthquake.

After the earthquake there was a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire came a still,

small voice .

I'll be sharing this scripture as an introduction to "Responding to the Nudge", the topic of my next motivational speaking

engagement.

We receive nudges every single day. Some may be subtle, like the still small voice, while others may be more direct, like a red light! How we interpret these nudges, and respond to the reason for the nudge, comes from our understanding of how God's Holy Spirit works in our lives.

A sample of some of the insights I'll be sharing include:

"Each person holds so much power within themselves that needs to be let out. Sometimes they just need a little nudge, a little direction, a little support, a little coaching, and the greatest things can happen." ~ Pete Carroll

"There's a saying that goes, 'The universe gives you a whisper, then a nudge, then a push and then an anvil on your head." ~ Sara Genn

How do you know when to act, and when NOT to. Nudges speak to us, when we are about to speak or act out of alignment with God’s desires. Not all nudges are for others. Some of them are for us!

Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if anything, worthy of praise, think about these things. Philippians 4:8

Classroom Presentation Children's Lit

I visited with some of the 5th grade students at the Cameron Middle School in Cameron, Mo yesterday. After a brief presentation on the elements of being a published author, I shared excerpts from my book, Marshall the Bully Goat .

The students enjoyed meeting Marshall and listening to some of his bully goat antics.

I explained the process of writing books, from the manuscript to editing and publishing. I told them that they might need illustrations, and if they were good at drawing, they could create their own. I admitted that I wasn't good at that, so I paid an illustrator, Ann Hougue to illustrate my books for me. One of the girls presented me with a drawing she'd done of me while I was speaking. I thanked her and told her she was on her way to being a fantastic illustrator!

I love my school presentations and the questions and comments that come from the children.

Reading to Elementary Students at their school in Stewartsville, Missouri

I read my children's books to elementary school students at the Stewartsville, MO school as part of their Read Across America week . The students were very attentive and helped me sound out the animal sounds in the stories. I was very impressed with their questions. They responded to my introduction of how I became an author at the "old" age of 64 and continue to write books in

Their questions included:

"How long does it take to write a book?" I replied that Frolicking Farmyard Friends took me only about 15 minutes.

"Does your hand get tired writing all those words?" I replied that I type on the computer, so my hand doesn't get tired. Cute question from someone who is just learning to write!

"What will your next book be about?" I said I didn't know so they offered lots of suggestions!

"Did you draw any of the pictures?" I told them that I can't draw very well, so I let my friend Ann draw all my pictures.

"How did you get the idea to write your first book?" I said that I had prayed to God, and he told me in my mind and heart to write "Diane's Daily Devotions. One girl responded that I was like Noah, who God told to build a big boat!

The children asked so many questions, I knew they had been engaged. It was a great opportunity to share my books with my new friends and I thank the teachers for allowing me to share my presentation with them today.

Where did God go?

Each time I drive from my small town to a nearby city, I notice a tall tower with a red flashing light at the top. An airport is nearby, so I think the light flashes to alert planes of the tower's presence along the side of the Missouri River. However, as soon as the highway turns, I lose sight of the tower. It hasn't moved at all, but I have turned away from it.

So, it is with God. Sometimes we feel he's moved away from us, leaving us feeling alone and in need of his presence.

In in reality, he's in the same place he's always been. All we have to do is turn towards him and we will feel his presence strong and sure, guiding us away from harm and towards his comforting arms. Never despair that God has left you, but it's you who has turned away from him. When this happens, just change directions and you will find him again.

His beacon of love beckons you to walk with him. As long as you keep your eye on him, he promises that he "will never leave or abandon you." Hebrews 13:5.

Where is my Christmas Spirit?

Where is my Christmas Spirit; why does it go away?

I'm told that I should keep it with me every single day.

It isn't in the stockings or hanging on the tree.

I know I didn't wrap it up, but where else could it be?

I know that I should have it; I hope I find it soon.

For Christmas is a-comin, and I'm still out of toon.

I've got to get my cards addressed; I need to bake a pie.

There are so many things to do; why should I even try?

But wait, I see the baby; he's in the manger scene.

With Mary, Joseph, Shepherds and kings; and a little angel that sings.

Look at how sweetly he seems to sleep, in his tiny manger bed.

It stirs up something in my heart, and memories in my head.

I haven't lost the spirit; I just packed it away.

Thank you, Lord, for reminding me, of the Christ in Christmas day.

I'll keep this baby out all year, from my sight it will not part.

The Lord has Plans for You (Introductory Devotion) Jeremiah 29: 11-13 “For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. In those days when you pray, I will listen. If you look for me whole heartedly, you will find me.” The focus of this passage is that God has plans for us, and they are good. We don’t know what that plan is unless we ask in faith, believing that he will answer our prayers. In 2013 I asked God for direction in what to do with my life. I was sixty-two, working part-time and looking for something useful to do with my spare time. My prayer was that I felt lost, and needed something to bring my focus back to him and the work he wanted me to do. One day, I heard a distinct voice inside my head and heart saying “Diane’s Daily Devotions.” I responded, “I can do that!” I’m an ordained minister, a published poet and songwriter, and play the piano for church services, so am familiar with a number of hymn tunes and lyrics. The stars were aligned, the timing was perfect, and I started writing my daily devotions. My sister Susanne was the first to suggest I publish them, and so, after a year of writing and editing, my first book has been published. God prompted me, in answer to my prayer. I responded with “Here I am. Use me.” What is God’s plan for you? Ask him in faith, and I can assure you, he will answer you with a message to both your head and your heart. Prayer thought: Ask God for the plan he has for you and trust him to give you the answer.

Snowy Sunday

A good day for a comfortable rest

As much as we lament about a winter snowstorm, I have to admit I enjoy the quiet that accompanies the falling snow. Unlike a thunderstorm, which I also enjoy, the snow falls silently. No roaring thunder or streaking lightning. Just the silent falling, unless it contains ice pellets, which I do not like!

Our first snowfall of the season occurred last night, bringing around 2 inches of snow to our yard and walk. It's beautiful today, with the pine trees sporting a coat of white frosting, and the fields comfortably covered by their new blanket of snow. The serenity brings a sense of peace as I look across the landscape.

After church we returned to our cozy bungalow home for an afternoon of watching the Chiefs play football. We love our Chiefs even when they mess up their plays. After a hectic week of Thanksgiving festivities, it's nice to take a break. We'll start the coming week with a refreshed sense of purpose after a quiet day of relaxation. It's a real blessing to live in a place and time where we can be warm and comfortable in our homes and enjoy as much snack food as we want.

In this season of hope, let us remember those who don't have these luxuries. Those who suffer from having to sleep outdoors as the snow falls around them, and don't have a warm cozy bed to sleep in. Those who are continually hungry, in spite of being fed at least one meal a day. Who don't get to enjoy a warm morning shower or a steaming cup of morning coffee. If you feel so directed, take a couple of minutes to pray for all those people who don't know what a relaxing, refreshing Sunday afternoon feels like. Allow your heart to be open to the needs of others, so that they too will feel blessed with a quiet serenity, if only for a few brief moments.

Finding God in Small Things

God of Small Things

Have you ever heard of the flowering Wolffia plant ? It is so tiny that 5,000 blooms can fit into a thimble.

Dr. David Jeremiah, author, and founder of Turning Point ministries shared his thoughts on this tiny plant as a reflection on how God is present in both the large, such as the giant Saguaro Cactus, things we face in our lives, as well as in the small things like the Wolffia plant.

Can you imagine something so tiny? It’s like moss, covering shallow bodies of water. It’s unique in that each bloom is a separate bloom , unlike moss that occurs in a mass of blooms linked together. Dr. Jeremiah shared that we are often encouraged to give our two most major concerns to God each day, thus relieving us from the worry of the things that cause us stress and worry.

He reminds us that God is just as concerned with the small things as he is with the big. We shouldn’t think the small things aren’t worth sharing with him. By holding onto the small things that worry us we are denying him the opportunity to help us with them.

I’m in the VERY BIG concern of moving to a new home and location. I’m having to eliminate nearly two thirds of our 52-year accumulation of treasures, as they will not fit into the small cottage we’re moving into. I’m trusting God to help with the sale of our current home, the packing and moving and the elimination of our excess items.

However, I need to trust him with the emotions I’m feeling, the weariness I’m experiencing and the constant reminders of how much more preparation I have yet to do. He cares about the small incidental things just as much as the large, worrisome things.

Through my prayers he’s told me to “Just wait until you get settled and put your own unique spin on the welcoming spirit of your new home.” And “By summer you’ll be done with all the worry and can enjoy your new quiet little town (Wathena, KS), and your pretty little home.”

I thank God for helping me through the process of moving. It’s a big task completed by a series of small steps. My challenge is to trust God with both the big and smallest of concerns. He’s big enough to handle them all.
